Should I Replace My Whole Cover or Just the Skin?

Covers older than about 4 years typically need full replacement, not just a new outer skin. That’s because the foam core inside often becomes waterlogged over time, losing its insulation ability and becoming very heavy. This happens gradually, so many don’t notice until they compare it to a new one.

Although covers include a plastic moisture barrier, it wears out with age, letting water seep into the foam. Unfortunately, once wet, the foam is nearly impossible to dry and the barrier can’t be easily replaced. For this reason, most covers need full replacement every 5 to 7 years.

If your cover is newer and has only suffered surface damage, and the foam core is still dry, then a skin-only replacement may be possible—but this is less common, especially as covers age.
